Carlos Gomez didn’t choose the thug life, the thug life chose him

gomez-fightJust in case you ignored Fox Sports, Fox Sports-1, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNews, the radio, WTMJ-4, Fox6, newspapers and the internet for the last twenty four hours you maybe missed this big news story: Carlos Gomez hit a triple and then the pitcher said something to him and then he got thrown out for starting a bench clearing brawl. He then did an interview where he stated "I’m not apologizing for nothing I did today. This is my job, I’ve been doing it for eight years like that. They know I play like that. It’s not to disrespect nobody. So if they take it like that, they don’t like it, that’s fine, and I’m fine with it."

This whole thing inspired a discussion on whether or not Carlos Gomez is a thug and nothing quite captured the essence of the argument like HuskieNation TV who posted this video entitled "Carlos Gomez -Thug?" If that wasn't descriptive enough he added this: "Let me know what you guys think... Carlos Gomez...... he's a great player, but does he act like a thug much?"

Let's watch it. Actually don't. I will for you and then we'll find out if Carlos Gomez act like a thug much, together.

In his own way, HuskieNation TV captured the feelings of a nation. A HUSKIENation. He starts off by saying:

"Carlos Gomez. I mean, come on. From what I've seen he has to be one of the biggest thugs in the MLB."

Let's tackle this whole "thug" thing right off the bat. What is a thug? Dictionary.com defines thug as "a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer." As far as I know he hasn't killed anyone (that was Braun, right?), nobody says ruffian anymore and the only thing Carlos Gomez steals is bases (yeah buddy, HIGH FIVE), so I think that this definition is out the window. We better go to a real dictionary website for this one, Urban Dictionary:

To be a true thug doesnt mean wearing "bling", listening to rap and
talking "black". Being a gangsta isnt superficial.. To be a true thug
means you havent had it good your whole life, and you intend to change
that, and get out of the ghetto if thats where you are, you do whats
right, you dont take shit from anyone, and stand up for your friends and
dont let them take shit from anyone! You dont have to be a
stereotypical "gangsta" to be a thug, a skater can be a thug, a nerd can
be a thug, a hick can be a thug, a prep can be a thug, and old ass man
can be a thug! So forget your stupid fucking stereotypes and thinking
that everybody has to fit into one group, and be labeled. And i'll tell
you what... Damn it feels good to be a gangster!

You know what? Let's just say thug means an athlete who gets in trouble that isn't white. I think that's what he was getting at anyway.

"You don't believe me? Go ahead, let's see. Check out... I at least know two of the fights. The fight against the Braves last year where both benches cleared and uhh.. the one yesterday with the Pirates. I don't really know what it was all about yesterday, I mean not yesterday, but the one with the Pirates. I'm guessing he was jaw-jacking got some people pissed off."

Two bench clearing brawls makes you a thug. By this notion, Pete Rose is John Wayne Gacy and Nolan Ryan is Pablo Escobar. Bench clearing brawls are apart of baseball. They are the baseball version of a hockey fight which is exactly as sad as that sounds. I'm really going to need some better proof on this whole thug thing, guy.

He then goes on to explain the Braves brawl because he actually saw that one.

"You hit a homerun and you wanna watch it? Go ahead. Stand there and watch it for a minute, but then you run. He was running he said some, um, bad things. And so some people got mad. What I thought funny, the pitcher was staring him down the whole way then Brian McCann came up wouldn't let him touch home plate, bla bla bla.

I just think Carlos Gomez is a thug."

Oh, okay, if you put it that way.

This is a classic argument technique, by the way. Lay out a bunch of facts that describe a situation where one person seems in the right, but then call them a name so that people know you are cool and the person you are talking about is bad. It's politics 101, bro.

"I mean, he started two bench clearing brawls in the past two years. I mean, he's a good player, but he's a thug. (laughs) He's just a thug. Let me know what you guys think. This is kind of short, don't have much information to go off of, I just think from what I've seen he's a thug. Let me know what you guys think in the comments."

What do I think? I think you're a fucking idiot.

But really, Carlos Gomez is just an emotional baseball player. It's what makes him good at baseball. He plays HARD and gets MAD at stuff and CARES how he and his team are doing. Classic thug behavior. He just wants to play and win and hey, screw you if you're being a dick. Is he the guy in the group who gets a little too upset and starts yelling "WHAT DID YOU SAY TO ME?!" Of course he is, but every team needs one of those. It's not "being a thug", it's having a personality.

Carlos Gomez never texted death threats to his wife, got charged with domestic abuse or threw firecrackers out of car window. He was a dick to someone playing baseball against him who was a dick to him first. That's it.

Relax.

Shut up.
