Well, the day that we inevitably knew was going to come has come and Zack Greinke is no longer a Milwaukee Brewer. I wish he could have stayed and won the World Series; but the bullpen, luck and the injury bug had other plans. Now he's gone.
It's been a weird run. There were a lot of really great times. I'll never forget the day I found out he was coming to Milwaukee and I invented a dance to go along with it. I was so excited I nearly peed my pants. I was smiling and laughing and dancing. I was so, SO happy. Insanely happy. I even wrote about it:
Greatest moments of my life:
- Son being born
- Something involving my girlfriend*
- Zack Greinke becoming a Brewer
The point here is that I can't imagine what it felt like to want to close this site or to not like baseball anymore because I love this site and baseball and the Brewers more than anything in my life right now. I just want to write, watch and read about the Brewers every second of every day for the rest of my life. The Brewers are going to the World Series and then they are going to win it. We are about to see the greatest Brewers team of our lifetime. Everything that came before will seem like a joke.
Hey, 1982 what a season am I right? Yeah, what a season... FOR LOSERS! 2011 BITCHES!!!!
Besides the World Series and that laughable girlfriend comment, I think I agree with most everything that I said at that time. Last year's team really was the greatest team of my lifetime. They just didn't know how to not pitch Marcum and Narveson in the most important game of the season (I really need to stop doing this) and it ended sooner than it should have. The Zack Greinke trade brought me from a place where I wasn't sure if I still wanted to be in love with baseball and made me be totally in love with it again. I've never wavered again and I'm really glad it worked out how it did. Every fifth day was like a mini-holiday for awhile there. I saw some amazing games at Miller Park with Zack on the mound and it was pretty awesome. I liked it.
That's not to say that we didn't have our ups and downs. Remember that whole basketball thing? (Five star photoshop by me there.) Or the time I wrote that "Zack Greinke loses his damn mind everytime there is runners on base"? Which is true, he could be like that sometimes. Was I being too hard on him? Of course. Sometimes we want our star pitchers to be Superman and Zack Greinke was more Clark Kent than that, but he could still pitch. I was hard on him, but he was great. But then you remember the playoff game when he cruised and then all the sudden didn't cruise anymore and you're like "huh, that should have been easy." He had to have been the most frustrating great pitcher of all time.
All that stuff was last year though. This year? It's been insane. He has been insane. There have been games where I wasn't sure if I'd ever seen a better pitcher. There were games when I was actually angry at the Brewers for doing this to Zack. Like how could they? He's pitching his d off and this is how you repay him? With Cesar Izturis and that bullpen? Come on. That's how good he was at times. I stopped being a Brewers fan and became a Zack Greinke fan. He made me turn a blind eye to everyone else in the world except him like he was Joan Holloway walking down the halls of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. He was amazing with the curves to match and I couldn't keep my eyes off him.
But now he's gone. Off to find his riches and glory with another team. There is a small chance he will be back, but let's be for real: he won't. Free agent pitchers go to the highest bidder and the Brewers aren't in the business of being the highest bidder. (And I don't want them to be.) If Doug's offer wasn't good enough then that is that and it is time to move on. On to the next thing. I'd like to see Zack Greinke win the World Series with his should-be a Brewer teammate Mike Trout, but I'd like to see a lot of people win the World Series. I'd like to see Ichiro win the World Series and I hate the Yankees more than I hate anything in this world. I'd like to see Prince Fielder win a World Series, but I really don't when I think about it. The truth is that I don't really care who wins the World Series if that team is not the Brewers. Zack Greinke can get his ring, but it won't mean anything to me. It'll be good for him, but it won't be good for us and I guess that's the point.
It was really fun having Zack Greinke on our team. From his post game comments to his crazy pitching performances to his random absolutely horrible performances to all the people who never learned how to spell his name, it was never boring with Zack Greinke in a Brewers uniform. But he's not in a Brewers uniform anymore and he probably won't be ever again so the love affair that we shared is now over. Much like an ex-girlfriend I don't want to stay friends, because we aren't going to do the things that we used to do anymore and I don't really care about you if you're not here. So why carry on the charade?
It's been real Zack Greinke, but this is where our story ends. Have a great life. Talk to you never.
