Hey, look the Brewers made number one on The Juice! What did they say!?
Was this the weekend when the Milwaukee Brewers made their big move in the NL Central? Time will tell, but a sweep-sealing 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday put winning pitcher Chris Narveson right) and the Crew in command of a division race that has been neck and neck for most of the year.
Combined with the St. Louis Cardinals getting swept by the Toronto Blue Jays, the domination at Miller Park gave the Brewers a three-game lead in the Central and some more hope that they can win the team's first division title since 1982.
The Brewers just put together a complete three game series. The pitchers pitched, the hitters hit and even Yuniesky Betancourt joined in on the fun. It's a weird feeling today, the Brewers have an off day and it's the most disappointing thing to happen all week. I don't want them to have an off day. I want to see them win some more. I want to see Yuni hit some more. I want to see how far Braun and Prince doing their thing can go. I'm ready for Casey McGehee's redemption and for the ongoing one-upping between the starters to continue. For the first time in a long time I just want more. More Brewers please.
Of course, the Brewers could easily see their three game lead go away in the following series against the Yankees. No matter how good the Brewers have been this season, the Yankees are still the Yankees. They've somehow turned Freddy Garcia and Bartolo Colon into a decent rotation. They still have a lineup that resembles a video game and they still have all that b.s. Yankee Stadium "mystique".
While the sweep over the Twins was nice, this series against the Yankees is probably the most important of the season to date. The Brewers have a comfortable three game lead, but a bad showing in New York could make that all go away very quickly. I'm not saying that's what is going to happen. I'm just saying the answer to the question "Was this the weekend when the Milwaukee Brewers made their big move in the NL Central?" is no, but this series might be.
I love the pitching match ups in the first two games. Marcum and Greinke will be able to hold their own against the Yankee lineup while Garcia and Burnett are definitely hittable. Game 3 is CC Sabathia and if there is any right in this world the Brewers will rock him. It's shaping up to be a pretty exciting series which is sort of amazing considering we haven't even reached the All-Star break yet.
