Out of the Park Baseball is the greatest baseball simulation there has ever been. In fact, I'd argue it is the greatest anything simulation there has ever been. It is so deep, so detailed, so realistic and so awesome in every way that it is easy to get into a game and see hours, days and weeks pass by. I've reviewed the past two years of the game (OOTP13, OOTP14) by playing fantasy seasons as the Brewers. One year I went to the playoffs, another year I fired Ron Roenicke. They were fun and I was able to fulfill some wishes, but that's not what we're doing this year. It is one thing to take a team you like and make them as good as you want them to be. It is a complete other thing to take a team that you hate and make them awful. That's what I am going to do today. I am taking the Cardinals and making them bad. Real bad.

To do this there is only one man I can trust to handle the job.

This won't be easy because I need to do it without being obvious and getting fired, but if there is one person I can trust to completely ruin a good baseball team it's Yuni. Unfortunately, for him, our owner doesn't know this.

Yuni's first order of business was installing the "new Cardinal Way" or the "Yuni Way". To do this he set up this "optimal" playing strategy.

cootp4I don't know how to make "not be good at defense" a strategy. It might look like this. Also, holding baserunners is just annoying.

cootp5Live and die by L/R matchups. I just did this to be annoying. (Like the Cardinals.)cootp6YUNI HATE ROOKIES. YUNI HATE OBP.

And now it's time to play. I simmed through the first month and lost Randy Choate for the season, but other than that all was right in Cardinal Town. Clearly, the Yuni Way hasn't caught on yet. In first place with everything going the team's way. The owner is ecstatic.

We made some more adjustments to the "Yuni Way" including keeping pitchers in the game too long and 140 pitch counts, but it didn't matter. At the end of May, the Cardinals had the best record in the league.

The Cards are being led by an awesome rotation.

The lineup isn't half bad either.

What they lack in batting average, they make up for in homeruns and this simply will not do. It's time to hit the trading block.

Veteran starter? CHECK.
Veteran outfielder? CHECK.
Young 2B out of the way so Mark Ellis can play more? CHECK.
Lance Lynn to the bullpen? CHECK.

Shortly after the trade and it is time for the amateur draft. How do I ruin this?

Draft a bunch of guys who won't sign!
"It wasn't my fault Mr. Owner," Yuni said "these kids are just too greedy!"

We needed a new backup infielder to fill the hole left by Wong. Brendan Ryan has grit. Joe Kelly is just some pitcher. Bullpen weakened and a veteran added, it's a classic Yuni trade.

This is... not ideal. I want them to be terrible. I want them to choke, but they keep getting better. Carpenter is playing out of his mind, Wainwright is winning the Cy Young and everything that could go right for them is happening. I hate this stupid team and I wish they would just lose every game for the rest of the season. Things look bleak, but maybe there is hope...

Shut up, Yuni.

The All-Star Game is here and the Cardinals land 5 All-Stars (including Peter Bourjos who isn't even a full time starter and has a line of .272/.314/.433, umm, okay). In proof that there is a God the Cardinals have now lost 7 out of their last ten! The lead is down to 6! Woohoo!

But Yuni can't let that happen. He needs to hold this lead. He needs to WIN NOW and his owner said he wants to win it all this year. That means it's time for...

Would this trade ever happen? I don't know. I do know Lance Lynn has a 5.82 ERA right now and that Josh Beckett is a proven playoff commodity with a 2.73 ERA. A genius move by Yuni here and the fans agree.

And these are the Best Fans in Baseball so you know it's good.

I simmed to the trading deadline and now the lead is only 4 games over the Reds and 6 over the Brewers. Despite his team leading 14 homeruns, Matt Adams is having a season from hell. His .201/.259/.371 slash line is simply unacceptable (even for Yuni) and the Cardinals need to make an upgrade at first base.

RYAN HOWARD!!!!!!!!!!

Who cares that Ryan's .188/.241/.325 line is much, much worse than Matt Adams could ever dream of being? Who cares that we had to give up Josh Beckett to make the money work? Who cares that this trade will send the Cardinals into crippling debt? The Cardinals are going for it! FIVE DOLLAR FOOTLOOOOOONNNNNGGGGG!

And the Best Fans in Baseball go crazy!

At the end of July the lead is down to the three, but that will soon probably be back to 10 because the Cardinals now have Ryan Howard.

I sim and sim and sim, ignoring the improved in-game settings because I just need the Cardinals to lose.

It's now September 1st and the lead is 2 1/2 over the Reds and four over the Brewers. Things are not looking good. In a move that would only work out for Yuni B, Ryan Howard is hitting .283/.333/.500 since joining the Cardinals. Rumor has it they are signing Jared to a Winter League contract and he's going to hit 40 bombs. Adam Wainwright remains the Cy Young favorite with 19 wins and 2.15 ERA. The worst injury they've suffered all season has been Jhonny Peralta. Everything is coming up Cardinals.

Oscar Tavares goes out for rest of the regular season and...

They get swept by the Brewers (!) and...

The Reds have a chance to take control, but lose the series. :(

We're down to the final three games of the season. The Cardinals hold a 1 game lead over the Reds. The Reds play the Pirates and the Cardinals play the Diamondbacks.

In game one the Cardinals lose, but so do the Reds.
In game two the Cardinals lose, but so do the Reds.
In game three the Cardinals lose, but the Reds win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At 87-75 neither team is good enough for a Wild Card so it will be a winner take all one game playoff and...

This sucks.

The Cardinals won.

Damn. They're going to win the World Series, aren't they?

dbryanWell, it didn't quite work out how I planned it but I made the Cardinals fans have a bad time so... I guess it was worth it?

Oh yeah, it was definitely worth it.

I kept playing into the offseason and it was as bad as it looks. Nobody could sign, re-sign or be extended. It would take a few months, but Yuni would be fired and something beautiful (a perennial contender) was ruined. I felt pretty good about myself.

But to be honest, I didn't really scratch the surface in this review of what this game can do. This is simply what a person can do in a single afternoon with a lot of simming. You can have games that last days, weeks, months. There is just so much to do. International signings, international complexes, complete minor league system and so much more that I probably haven't even discovered yet. This game is deep as hell and this review does it a disservice. It's really fun and if you're obsessed with baseball you should try it. It's really fun.

Out of the Park Baseball ("OOTP") is the most sophisticated and best-selling baseball simulation game on the planet. Since its inception, OOTP has won numerous awards, including multiple "Sports Game of the Year" awards, en route to becoming the most immersive, realistic, and customizable baseball experience a fan can ask for! You can download it from their website. I highly recommend it.

Vince Morales is the guy who runs this site. He likes the Milwaukee Brewers, pro wrestling and beer. If he offended you he is very, very sorry.
