I love the Brewers

I am the biggest Chicago Blackhawks fan that I know. Serious.

When I was a kid my dad had season tickets and we would drive down to see the games, every Sunday. The Blackhawks at the time had GREAT players like Jeremy Roenick, Eddie Belfour and Chris Chelios, driving them towards the playoffs and a Stanley Cup appearance. (My favorite player? Stu Grimson. The team's enforcer. Of course he was.) It was an impressionable time for a youth like myself, the Blackhawks were good and hockey was a pretty cool sport. I loved the Blackhawks, I loved watching them play and I loved hockey.

Fast forward to the present. The Chicago Blackhawks are in the Stanley Cup finals. They are leading three games to two and their next win means the first Stanley Cup championship in my lifetime. The first time any team that I deemed my "favorite team" won anything. This is a huge moment. People are excited, this is the biggest thing to happen to the Blackhawks since West Side Story was a hit. Clearly, this was a serious time and for any serious Blackhawks fan they would do whatever it took to see their team possibly win the Stanley Cup.

Only I didn't. I, the biggest Blackhawks fan that I know, did not make any special plans to watch the team play. I, the person who bitches non-stop about the fake Blackhawks fans that you see everywhere (Seriously, when is the last time you heard a person talk about hockey, nonetheless wear a hockey clothing article? Ever? Has that happened ever? Not counting Wisconsin shit. Yeah. I didn't think so.), didn't care if I saw the hockey game or not. Why? Why would I, a self described biggest Blackhawk fan that I know, knowingly skip the game that could decide a championship? Well, the answer is simple. The answer is that I had Brewers tickets and when the Brewers are playing that's all I really care about.

Which is honestly ridiculous because the Brewers aren't good. They suck actually. Do you know that Randy Wolf gave up 5 homeruns last night, three of which were in the same inning? Did you know that? Did you know he's also our highest paid pitcher? Did you know that I stayed the entire game, hoping for a comeback that I truly believed would come? Did you know that when the game ended I was caught between a mass of happy Cubs fans and happy Cubs fans who also just saw the Blackhawks win in overtime? Brewers fans didn't stick around. Apparently, me and the three people I was with are the only people who thought they could come back in the ninth and we were left out to dry by our brethren. I was alone and I was surrounded by people who were excited about something that I should have also been excited about, but wasn't. That doesn't feel good. That sucks. I threw my Rickie Weeks jersey away.

I'm not a good enough write to tell you how much it sucks that your favorite hockey team in the whole wide world just won the first championship that one of your favorite teams has ever won in your lifetime and you're not even being happy about it, but trust me it does. What is that?

That....  is love. I guess.

The Brewers are my team and I would, apparently, rather watch them lose a meaningless game than watch my favorite hockey team in the whole wide world win a championship. Who knew?

(btw i wrote this post post-game. yep.)
