Lay off Casey McGehee

Lost in the elation of yesterday's win was a single moment in the game that really pissed me and other like minded Brewers fans off. With the Brewers up five runs in the eighth inning and K-Rod due to bat at the top of the inning the Brewers called upon a pinch hitter. The hitter chosen by Brewers manager Ron Roenicke was Casey McGehee. Casey McGehee took about two pitches before hitting a foul pop-up that the catcher caught for the out. As Casey McGehee headed back to the dugout he was treated to a chorus of boos from the crowd at Miller Park. #areyouseriousbro

I am not here to defend the season of Casey McGehee. A .626 OPS is not good. In fact, it is very bad. He underperformed badly and now he has (seemingly) been replaced in the lineup by Jerry Hairston. If you are one of the people who believes that Casey McGehee is responsible for all of the Brewers losses this season then this is exactly what you wanted to happen. Adding to that, a pinch hit at bat when the Brewers are up five runs in the late innings is exactly the time you should want to see Casey McGehee swing the bat. If he gets a hit, great. If he doesn't, the Brewers are still up five. He was the second bat off the bench after Mark Kotsay. He didn't have anything to do with the game's outcome. He can't ruin anything. He has done nothing to deserve a boo.

Before I dig deeper into this idea of booing someone during a playoff game when your favorite team is in the midst of (possibly) it's greatest run ever, I want to tell you a story. Continue reading »

Casey McGehee, Milwaukee’s Dark Knight

Casey McGehee was a hero. He came from the Cubs two years ago (where they didn't think he was worthy of being a backup on their team) and ended up playing better than their much higher paid third baseman while becoming a hero to Brewers fans everywhere. His story was a good one, the kind of story that can only happen in baseball, a story of a guy who scouts didn't think much of who suddenly started hitting better than he ever had before in his whole life. He became a star and Brewers fans fell in love with Casey McGehee much in the same way they are falling in love with Nyjer Morgan today. His jerseys were everywhere and he could do no wrong in the eyes of his fans. Casey McGehee wasn't a top draft pick or the son of a former major leaguer, he was a working class guy that looked like he'd fit in great in the parking lot. Casey and the Brewers were a perfect match and love blossomed.

“He’s going to be out awhile” is Roenicke speak for the season is over

We don't know much right now. We don't know exactly what's wrong. We don't know how long he'll be gone. We don't know who will replace him. All that we know is that Rickie Weeks got hurt tonight and the sky started falling.

Maybe it's just a sprain. Maybe he won't be out for long. Maybe his 15-day DL stint is just that and the Brewers won't skip a beat. I want to think these things. I want to believe these things. Yet I can't shake the image I saw tonight. Rickie Weeks, the man who takes fastballs to the face and laughs it off, the man who stands in the middle of the plate like Happy Gilmore at the batting cages just for kicks, the toughest of all the Brewers; laying on the ground unable to get up and stand on his own feet. His season flashed before my eyes and with his season went the Brewers season. There will be no playoffs for this team. The Brewers' season is over.

Wake Up Mr. Greinke

I never ever wanted to write a negative word about Zack Greinke and hoped that time would never come, but unfortunately it has. Let's do it.

BREWERS STARTERS WITH ERA OVER 5.50 (Last 5 years)

  • Manny Parra 6.36 (2009)
  • David Bush 6.38 (2009)
  • Zack Greinke 5.66 (2011)

That's it. That's the whole list.

Now I know what you're thinking "Jesus, 2009 sucked" and my god did it ever. Hopefully you're also thinking "WTF IS ZACK GREINKE DOING THERE!?" 2009 was awful, but I would argue that 2011 could end up being a whole lot worse if Zack Greinke doesn't get his act together. He doesn't belong on this list, but that's how he has played thus far this season and he has sucked.

"but.. but.. he's had terrible luck! His xFIP proves it!"

"And he's winning games! He's 7-3!"

"Look at his BABIP, it's really high it will even out over time! And his LOB% is low!"

Shut up. Stop making excuses for him and shut up. You sound like an abused girlfriend who won't stop insisting that your boyfriend, Green Bay Packers cornerback Brandon Underwood, is really a good guy once you get to know him. More Brewers please

Hey, look the Brewers made number one on The Juice! What did they say!?

Was this the weekend when the Milwaukee Brewers made their big move in the NL Central? Time will tell, but a sweep-sealing 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday put winning pitcher Chris Narveson right) and the Crew in command of a division race that has been neck and neck for most of the year.

Combined with the St. Louis Cardinals getting swept by the Toronto Blue Jays, the domination at Miller Park gave the Brewers a three-game lead in the Central and some more hope that they can win the team's first division title since 1982.

YEAH!

The Brewers just put together a complete three game series. The pitchers pitched, the hitters hit and even Yuniesky Betancourt joined in on the fun. It's a weird feeling today, the Brewers have an off day and it's the most disappointing thing to happen all week. I don't want them to have an off day. I want to see them win some more. I want to see Yuni hit some more. I want to see how far Braun and Prince doing their thing can go. I'm ready for Casey McGehee's redemption and for the ongoing one-upping between the starters to continue. For the first time in a long time I just want more. More Brewers please. Continue reading »
