It could be worse? An OOTP Diary

I love baseball simulators. I don't want to play the games, I just want to be the GM. I want to trade for Jim Thome to be a pinch hitter. I want to have fire sales that would cripple a franchise. I want to develop a super team of young, cheap talent and watch them flourish. I like to take a crap team and make them amazing. It's fun for me.

For years I've been playing Baseball Mogul and those games are fun, but after the 20th season you can sort of predict what rookies will become stars and which ones won't. This season I first tried Out of the Park Baseball on my iPhone and proceeded to destroy my battery and an entire afternoon in the process. After that I tried out the full version of a friend's and fell in love. This game had it all. Rule 5 Draft, negotiations with amateur draft picks, all the minor league levels, compensation picks and everything else. OOTP blows Baseball Mogul out of the water. This is the game I've always dreamed existed and I fell in love. And I love it so much that I decided to keep a diary of the 2012 Brewers. Continue reading »

Are the Brewers meant for more?

I may have mentioned this before and I might not have, but earlier this year I was fired from a job. It wasn't a particularly good job, but it was my job and I'd been there for awhile and they fired me. (FUN FACT: Did you know you can get fired for telling your boss "f*ck you"? It's true!) When I got fired from my job I wasn't upset about losing the job. I was upset that I worked at that job for so long. The reason being that I believed I was meant for more. I believed that the job that I had was not worthy of my employment and that I was selling myself short by working there for so long. I was not being the person that I believed myself to be and that was a terrible feeling. I can do better. I am meant for more than that.

I heard a story the other day about a guy who was getting divorced. He was married for 30 years, longer than I have been alive (by a couple months at least), and his wife decided that she needed a divorce. It wasn't anything to do with him or their relationship, she just didn't see herself where she thought she was going to be when they got married. She looked in the mirror and didn't like what she saw anymore. She believed that she was meant for more than what she was.

Another good friend of mine lost her job this year too and she had the same feeling I did. She wanted to do more with her creativity. She wanted to use her mind in her work. She wanted to do something that mattered, something she could believe in. She wanted more and she believed that was what she was meant to do.

The real reason Carlos Gomez doesn’t play

Yesterday for the fifth straight game Carlos Gomez was not in the starting lineup for the Milwaukee Brewers. There are many theories as to why this is. Some point to his comments about Lorenzo Cain when he said:

"I'm the best centerfielder on the team. But Lorenzo is doing a really good job for the last two weeks and it's not fair for me to come off the DL and take his chance. I understand. He is a really good player, but I think I'm still the man on this team."

That would make sense. Others simply point to his horrendous .229/.286/.348 line and compare them to... anybody and it makes perfect sense why he's not been playing.

The debate as to whether Gomez should or shouldn't play, or should or shouldn't be re-signed is something that has been discussed heavily in the Brewer community over the past few weeks. However, it's hard to discuss these sorts of things if you don't know all of the facts.

The final weekend

So, this is it. Our last chance to go to Miller Park. It seems like only yesterday I was doing a countdown to Opening Day, telling you what not to wear and how to drink. Now? It's all over. If you haven't been to a game in awhile and want to get one last one in, stubhub has some truly crazy deals on tickets right now (Terrace for $.50, Field Infield Box for $15, Loge Infield for $10, Loge Diamond Box for $10, tons of deals). They might win, they might not. Doesn't really matter. Miller Park is a great place just to hang out. If you don't have faith in the team on the field just stay in the parking lot for the first four innings. I can't say I've never done it and I know you'll have a good time because it's ALWAYS a good time. Personally, I am happy with my last game of the season being Wednesday's game (and not just because I'm still hungover.) I got to see Prince go yard, a starting pitcher actually do a good job and Trevor Time. I can't think of a better way to remember this season than that (outside of flipping The Happy Youngster over the railing into the bullpen).

Speaking of my last game, something really weird happened at it: I met some readers and they were happy about it. "It's a pleasure to meet you" they said. My only reply? "Really? Seriously? You're kidding right?" I'm glad that people read this blog and I'm more glad that the people who read it really like it, but let's face the facts. I'm just another douchebag who spills his beer on a pregnant chick. Nothing to get excited about.

Anyways, enjoy the weekend gang. I'll be back Monday with more stuff, just like I'll be back every week all winter long. Just because the Brewers will be gone doesn't mean I suddenly have important stuff to do. Quite the opposite.
