The Best And Worst of the Milwaukee Brewers First Half

It's a semi-annual feature, the Best and Worst of the Milwaukee Brewers first half! The first half of the season is done so it's time for us to once again steal the Best and Worst format from With Spandex and cover the good, the bad and the ugly of the Brewers first half.

But before we get into that, I need to remind you that the Miller Park Drunk Pants Party aka The Greatest Tailgate Party Of The Summer is coming up in just ten days. Strangely, there are still tickets available and we would really like for you to come. Tickets include a game ticket, beer koozie, commemorative cup, all-you-can-eat delicious tailgate food and all-you-can-drink beer/strawberry, jalapeno and watermelon infused margaritas/more. We are grilling up brats, bringing back the brat pizza from last year and doing NY-themed meatball sandwiches. It's going to be good. The game is 7/27. You can get four tickets for $120. All you need to do is show up and watch the Brewers beat the Mets. You will have the time of your life. Do it. (And if you can't go you can at least buy a koozie pack.)

The Brewers are in first place so this should be easy, right? Everything is a best! It is the greatest season ever! We are cruising into the playoffs! Right? Right?! Continue reading →

Everything Is Not Awesome

The Brewers just got swept by the Philadelphia Phillies. It's hard to saw which one was more unbelievable: the one where they gave up seven runs in the eighth inning, the one where Lyle Overbay hit a grandslam and they blew a 5-1 lead in the SECOND inning or the one where Roberto Hernandez pitched a three hitter. I'm going to go with the Overbay one because I was there and I did this:

On top of that, the Brewers have now lost 9 out of 10 and have only a two game lead over the Cardinals who just so happen to be coming to town for a three game series starting tonight.

Everything is not awesome. Everything is not cool when you're following this team. Continue reading →

Ron Roenicke: A Life of Dumb Luck

roenicke-dumbIn case you missed it the other night, the Brewers won a game in which they used a pitcher to pinch hit in the tenth inning. Despite all of the factors involved and the success of the move, it was not ideal baseball strategy. Which probably shouldn't come as a surprise to you because it was executed by Ron Roenicke. Whether he has been calling in pitchers who aren't warmed up, running out of pinch hitters or not really having a basic understanding of how best to use the replay system, Ron Roenicke has proven that he isn't always the sharpest tool in the drawer. Yet for what seems like the hundredth time, everything worked out. Why?

Ron Roenicke is a baseball lifer, basically. He was a college baseball player who was drafted in the first round (!) of the 1977 draft who then went on to play for six different teams in his eight year career. Once that was done he got into managing which led him all the way to Milwaukee. Now I know what you're thinking, "Wait, how can a guy with 17 years of professional baseball experience be so bad at his job?" The answer is demon magic. Just kidding, it's dumb luck. Ron Roenicke's entire career is dumb luck. Continue reading →

The End of the World: An OOTP Diary

Last week saw the release of OOTP14, the latest in Out of the Park Developments excellent baseball simulation series, and ever since then I have been playing it. The game is a definite upgrade from last season, but also I played as the Yankees, I played as the Pirates and I played as the Braves, but I never played as the Brewers. The reason is simple: I don't know what the hell is going on with them or what to expect from them. The scoreless streak, the winning streak, Yovani's DUI and the basic roster construction just don't make a lot of sense to me and I don't know how to make this team better. OOTP Doug MelvinSo how do I manage that team? Do I call up Hunter Morris, DFA Alex Gonzalez and/or Yuniesky Betancourt and ship Axford out of town? Do I Stand Pat? Will any of it even matter?

The truth is I don't know what will happen which makes this, not my favorite, but definitely the most intriguing Brewers season I can think of in a long time. For Doctor Who fans, it's much more Clara than Rose Tyler. Or for people who've actually had sex, it's much more LOST than NCIS. Or for people who aren't good with analogies, it's a mystery that won't be solved over night.

Which I guess makes it the perfect season to simulate with OOTP14. So hold on to your hats because we're doing a diary to see just how bad (or good) this season is going to get. (Again.) Continue reading →
